AGRO was founded in September 2010, it is a members led organisation and is run by people in recovery for people in recovery.
The purpose of AGRO is to promote recovery from alcohol and other drug problems through activity, supporting families, raising awareness, breaking down stigma and providing information in Anglesey and Gwynedd.
AGRO is unique as it offers members support and help at any stage of recovery; this can be on the first day or 25 years on. We offer activities and support outside of service hours on evenings and weekends, as well as during the week.
As a member led organisation founded on the values of inclusivity and mutuality, AGRO is an organisation run by people in recovery for people in recovery. More than three quarters of the organisation’s Board are people in recovery or who have been affected by addiction; this provides for an approach that is truly recovery and service user focused.
As AGRO is member led it’s the members who decide how AGRO is run and what activities they would like to participate in. Members and volunteers fundraise, organise and co-ordinate group meetings and activities. Each group has its own dynamics and it is recognised by AGRO that everyone’s recovery journey is different and individual to them.
We aim to be non-judgemental, supportive and have no hierarchy within the groups so everyone is treated equally and on the same level. There is no forcible disclosure of information so individuals are known for who they are, not for their addiction and their past.
We have weekly support groups all over Anglesey and Gwynedd and strive to increase this to reach out to the rural communities of Wales where services are harder to access. We also have weekly projects running which include allotment projects, football group, walking group and fishing group. In addition to all these activities we have a monthly partnership activity with the Bangor University Students Union and extra activities which vary on a month to month basis, ranging from arts and crafts to snowboarding and mountain biking.
AGRO’s vision is a community that nurtures hope, confidence and a sense of belonging in an atmosphere of mutual inspiration and understanding.
